Think Outside the London Box with a Digital Marketing Agency

When looking for a digital marketing agency for your business, you may be tempted to gravitate towards London. Densely populated with professionals, buildings, businesses, and marketing agencies. It’s a decision that makes sense at surface level.

London can be great. But depending on what you’re looking for, it can also be a needle-in-a-haystack situation. So maybe it’s time to look outside London and consider some alternatives.

And the Most Creative City is…

You’d be forgiven for looking around the streets of London, seeing all the huge adverts and landmarks, and thinking the capital is the creative centre of the universe. Spoiler alert, it isn’t.

In fact, it’s not even voted the most creative city in the UK. According to this study/blog, Edinburgh wins that award. It’s easy to see why, with its month-long Fringe being the world’s largest arts festival.

But what does this have to do with digital marketing? Flyers and posters just don’t cut it anymore, so the easiest way for acts to promote themselves was via social media route (aka digital marketing).

You can be sure some of these acts reached out for digital marketing help. Though local agencies probably helped, as these performers were coming from all over the UK (and perhaps the world), agencies nationwide would have been sought after. It can be more about what suits your business/act than location.

The keyword is digital, it can be anywhere.

Locations and Questions

It depends where you’re located and how you want to do things. Do you want to work with an agency near to you, are you happy travelling or just going the ever-popularising method of remote working and video calls? You might want to do a convenient mixture of both.

Either way, for those of you who might not want to stray as far as Edinburgh there are many other options outside of London. So you may want to hold fire on popping digital marketing agency London in the search bar for now.

Agencies Outside London are Growing

If you stopped reading this to check out the case study linked above, you may have noticed Southend-on-Sea at the top of the list of 10 least creative towns/cities in the UK. But is it really?

Parts of Essex, especially Southend are becoming ever popular due to its links to London, being about an hour away on the train, and at the time of writing Southend has just become a city itself.

Digital marketing agencies have been growing across Southend and its surrounding areas, wanting to offer London quality to businesses without the capital costs, with Revive.Digital in Southend’s high street being an agency with that exact mantra.

You may have also noticed that the study/blog was originally published in July 2017 and last updated in 2019…. a lot has changed since then. COVID-19 forced the world to become extra digital, so location mattered even less.

Smaller agencies outside London came to the rescue, gaining clients nationwide who were now forced to go digital throughout lockdowns. They needed experts to equip them with a digital marketing strategy that would keep their business afloat during one of the toughest times in recent years. These agencies even gained international clients.

Outside Essex and London, you have Cambridge at the top of the list for creative jobs per population, so you’re sure to find some digital marketers there. As well as Manchester, Oxford, and Bristol…with our old friend London in third place.

Why Looking Outside London Could Benefit You

The United Kingdom is one of the leading countries in the field of digital marketing. There are over 250,000 marketing agencies of all different types so it can be a challenge to find the one that’s right for you.

With the dense population in London, your search there could get confusing. Looking at cities or towns where agencies are more spread out may quickly identify what and who you’ll need, narrowing down your search.

These agencies are also likely to give you more attention and specialist care. They want to get to know you and create a strategy that suits you, rather than offer you a cookie cutter type approach that a busy (and expensive) London agency may do. So, when you next need a digital marketing agency, look for those personal qualities.
